BPD Alliance: A New Name and a Clearer Front Door for Families, Individuals, and Clinicians
When families, individuals, or clinicians reach out to us, they are often doing so in moments of real overwhelm. Many have been searching for answers for a long time. Some are exhausted. Some are frightened. Some are unsure whether help even exists for what they’re facing.
They’re seeking clarity—where to begin, what support is available, and what to do next. Over the past year, we took a careful look at how people experience that first encounter with us. Are we guiding them as clearly and compassionately as we should?
What We Learned When We Listened
As we approached our 25th anniversary, we saw it as a natural moment to pause and listen closely. Through research with nearly 1,000 families, individuals with lived experience, and clinicians, a consistent picture emerged.
People value our programs deeply. They trust our evidence-based, peer-led approach. At the same time, many told us that our “front door” is harder to navigate than it should be—especially for someone arriving in distress.
Families and individuals described feeling unsure where to begin, whether a resource was meant for them, or what step to take next. Clinicians told us they wanted clearer pathways for referrals. Many noted that our full name and acronym—while meaningful and important—could be difficult to remember, spell, or share in urgent moments.
This wasn’t a critique of our mission or our work. It was a signal that our impact has grown—and that the way people first encounter us needed to evolve.
Three Priorities That Guided Our Work
As we reflected on what we learned, three priorities became clear.
Clarity. People need plain-language guidance that helps them quickly understand what we offer and how to engage, without feeling overwhelmed.
Reassurance. The first interaction should feel welcoming rather than intimidating, helping people feel confident that they’re in the right place.
Structure. Different needs require different pathways. Families, individuals with lived experience, clinicians, volunteers, and donors should be able to find their way without unnecessary friction.
These priorities now shape how we present ourselves and how we guide people forward.
BPD Alliance: A Simpler Name for Moments That Matter
One visible result of this work is the adoption of an everyday public nickname: BPD Alliance.
Our official name—National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder—remains unchanged. It continues to be used in research, clinical contexts, and legal documents, honoring our full history and credibility.
The nickname serves a different purpose. It is easier to say, easier to remember, and easier to search. It signals community and connection, creating a simpler and more welcoming first point of contact for people who may already feel overwhelmed.
BPD Alliance reflects who we’ve become, not a departure from who we are.
Designing the Website Around First Moments
Alongside the new name, we redesigned our website with those early moments in mind.
The site now offers clear pathways for families and loved ones, individuals with lived experience, clinicians, volunteers, and donors. It uses plain language, a warmer tone, and simpler navigation to help people understand what we offer and what to do next. Our signature programs, including Family Connections™ and MSTR, are easier to find and easier to share.
If you haven’t already, we invite you to take a look at the new site at BPDAlliance.org and see how these changes come together in practice.
We Couldn’t Have Done This Without You
This work didn’t happen by accident.
Listening deeply, rethinking structure, and redesigning our digital front door required time, expertise, and resources. Your financial support made it possible to step back, learn from those we serve, and translate those insights into meaningful improvements in how people find and engage with our work.
In a very real sense, your generosity helped remove barriers at the moment people reach out for help.
Looking Ahead
The launch of BPD Alliance and the new website marks an important step—but this work is not finished. As we build the next 25 years together, our commitment remains clear: to welcome people with compassion, guide them with clarity, and connect them to evidence-based support that can change lives.
Thank you for helping us create a clearer front door.
When people reach out in distress, clarity and reassurance matter. Donor support helped create a clearer front door—so people know where to begin.
